ARTIST STATEMENT for Backfield
Sally Kindberg is a Swedish artist who graduated from her MFA at Goldsmiths in 2012. She has some fine achievements up her sleeve such as being awarded the Jerwood Painting Prize and having work hung at the Nordic Noir crime novelist Leif GW Persson’s mansion in the dark forests of Sweden.
Kindberg is planning to cover a wall in the gallery with small oil paintings of different continental and British cheeses and morphed portraits of strange characters ‘Taste is something that has always fascinated me and it is how one can manoeuvre a concept a little or a lot to create friction that interests me the most. These paintings of cheese are more than just a cheesy concept.’
Looking at these exquisitely painted images one may ask why she has chosen to paint cheese. ‘ As an object cheese is fascinating. it is both elastic and alive and it changes in form and smell. The materiality of cheese, the way it looks, the way it smells, the way it tastes and all the memories it brings along keep all the senses alert. Both good and bad.’
Kindberg's background includes driving the underground trains in Stockholm and dating professional poker players from Paris.
